Dapper.net – The data mapper – Site review

Dapper - The data mapperI found this site clicking on the AdSense banner. It’s called Dapper.net and here I will explain what is this service. It’s quite strange to find a non-profit site in AdSense block /at least this is my experience so far/, but this is the truth. The first impression was that it has quite neat and clean design and I wanted to understand more about it.

So what I found? Dapper is a web 2.0 application which extract the specified content from a site and create information source /dapp/ and store it as XML, which could be used from third party applications and sites.

“Dapper is a groundbreaking service, allowing companies and developers to seamlessly interact with web content. Using Dapper, companies can focus on building new applications and added value, relying on the Dapper infrastructure to take care of their web integration needs.”

Ok, good words, but I wanted to learn something more and if possible to try it. So, I created an account which took me 5 seconds without any special e-mail confirmation and so on /I really dislike the “time consuming” e-mail confirmation/.

So what you can do once you create an account. As content provider you should choose the license type for your content. There are few types from which you can choose:

  • In Exchange for Traffic Back
  • As Public Domain
  • According to My Specific Conditions
  • Explicit Permission Required
  • No Access
  • In Exchange for Shared Revenue – coming soon
  • For Pay – coming soon

After choosing the type, I’ve been asked to put a specific txt file on my site in order to prove that I am the site owner. Once I did it, I was ready to create my first information source.

Dapper WizardCreating the information source is quite amazing process, I can’t explain it with simple words, you have to see it. This video demonstration can give you more information for it.

When you finish with configuration of the Dapp, it will be listed with name and description in the “marketplace”. Then everyone which is interested can preview the dapp and can choose the format, in which he want to receive that information. There are quite few formats and I will mention part of them:

  • XML
  • RSS Feed
  • Google Gadget
  • XSL
  • JSON
  • YAML
  • iCal
  • Google Map
  • many others…

And this is not the end. There are Web Services, Dapper SDK and Dapper Transformer library which make the data formats specified above.

For conclusion: I really liked this site. Guys, you are doing quite amazing job. This service is really great tool!
